September Update

Hello! This is our first apartment update for our PDEV 271 Summit Park Leadership Community class. In case you didn't know, we are working with Jordan Valley Community Health Center, an encompassing medical facility for people in Springfield.

First, we want to outline our goals for our project this semester. We want to establish strong relationships with the Jordan Valley clients, build bonds with the Jordan Valley staff, and aide them in whatever they deem necessary for us to have the greatest impact on the community.

When we met with our community partner, Kayla, she discussed wanting us to work with the Congolese refugees who settle in Springfield. Originally she wanted us to ride on the Springfield public transit system with the refugees to their appointments at Jordan Valley, but after considering our time requirements she realized that would not be realistic.

Our focus now is to create and implement early literacy programming for the refugees. Many of them, according to Kayla, do not know enough English to make it to their doctors appointments. Some don't even know they have them. By creating the necessary tools to teach the refugees and their children English, we would help break the language barriers. Kayla said that many of the refugee parents feel attacked or misunderstood, but really they just are not informed on the importance of going to the doctor.

Our first assignment from Kayla was to cut out words from magazines. We will be using the words in craft projects for the younger children to begin to learn their sight words.

We have definitely faced some challenges in getting started with our community service hours and meeting with our community partner. Our community partner has been out of the country for the past few weeks and hasn't responded to us when we did reach out. We have a one hour orientation with Jordan Valley during the first week of October so we anticipate being more involved with the health center after that. When we found out that our contact was going to be gone for a while we knew it would be a challenge to start our hours, however, it seems that we will be developing a consistent schedule for going to Jordan Valley soon.

In terms of the dynamic of our living situation we have had a positive experience so far. There are now only 3 of us living in our apartment and only 2 of us in the Summit class. This provides us (Megan and Taylor) with a unique prospective because we are working with 1/2 a house, 50% less than most people. We are both very proactive in our studies and do not like procrastinating so we don't think getting the work done will be an issue. Gabby has been very encouraging and willing to help us if we have any questions or concerns about Jordan Valley.

We are excited to work with Jordan Valley and leave our mark on the community. Although we faced some setbacks early on, the future looks promising for our project.

From 625 B,
Taylor and Megan
